Honeybees pollinate 80 percent of the world’s plants and are responsible for every third bite of food we eat. However, over the past 50 years, changing agricultural practices have crippled their population. In 2015, US beekeepers lost 44% percent of their hives. Bee Downtown is working directly with local businesses to rebuild the honeybee community and increase awareness around the changing food ecosystem.

With help from our friends at Bee Downtown, SOUL Garden has a bee hive on Centennial Campus. The bee hive is a partnership between SOUL and Bee Downtown. SOUL Leaders will participate in volunteer education training on bees, agriculture and food production. SOUL will also receive a portion of the honey our hive produce. We are also proud to be bee hive neighbors with Bandwidth, NC State Entrepreneurship Initiative, NC State Nonprofit Institute, AndyAlbright.com, and Freudenberg IT.

The SOUL Garden has a beautiful, oval shaped pollinator garden right in the middle of the garden. Currently perennials growing inside and annual in the blocks. We received plants from the Pollinator Education Committee and Horticulture Field Labs. For soil amendment we will use compost generated from Scrap-to-Life composting program.

We are looking to partner with a student organization who can help us maintain it throughout the year. If your student organization has an interest in volunteering with us to oversee the pollinator garden, please fill out this google form and we will get in touch with you.
